Director of Corporate Strategy

Bimbo Canada is a market leading producer and distributor of packaged fresh bread and bakery products with brands such as Dempster’s®, Villaggio®, POM®, Bon Matin®, Ben’s®, Stonemill, ®  McGavins,® Orowheat®,  Vachon® and Takis®. The company operates 16 bakeries and employs approximately 4,200 associates across Canada.  Bimbo Canada pursues the goal of creating value by being at the forefront of manufacturing and service delivery innovation in the bakery industry through the continued improvement and refinement of its supply chain network. Bimbo Canada serves major grocery chains, retail outlets and food service operations across Canada with a robust offering of both branded and private label products.

Position Summary

The Director, Corporate Strategy, reporting to the Canadian President, has key responsibilities for guiding, leading and facilitating the execution of the Bimbo Canada strategic plan.  Providing guidance and structure in the development of Bimbo Canada’s goals and transformational objectives and ensuring alignment across the organization and with the corporate Grupo Bimbo office are important accountabilities. In this role you will:
  • Help identify new growth platforms and growth opportunities across the business through the identification of attractive market spaces, determining what it takes to win, assessing competitive positions and business models, and then helping the organization to align on the strategic direction and execution plan
  • Support the business in leading the research and analysis for identifying and assessing both organic and inorganic growth opportunities, and developing strategies that drive growth including key business turnarounds
  • Work closely with the Canadian executive team to manage cross-functional teams and initiatives
  • Ensure that business strategies are well-defined, describe talent and resource requirements and clearly articulate the action and insights required for execution
  • Identify, synthesize and communicate key trends across relevant industries, segments, regions, and competitors
 
Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Assist in strategy development that enables the organization to frame and make critical strategic decisions to profitably grow and defend the business.  Help the organization to refine its “where to play” and “how to win” choices to drive growth, improve profitability, and sustain competitive advantage.
  • Lead Bimbo Canada teams in solving complex business problems using a hands-on hypothesis-driven approach while:
    • Providing project management and thought leadership to project teams
    • Leading from the front by taking on complex workstreams and providing hands-on support, including serving in an individual contributor capacity when required
    • Developing project deliverables and executive presentation documents
    • Leading primary and secondary research
    • Framing discussion of findings and recommendations
    • Becoming a trusted advisor to the executive leadership team
  • Monitor progress against Bimbo Canada’s strategic plans and in partnership with Finance colleagues, identify major strategic changes using metrics, roadmaps, dashboards and financials
  • Assist leaders in identifying and developing plans to close performance gaps
  • Support projects to:
    • Identify, analyze, and resolve important strategic issues
    • Develop timely, well-informed analysis of the competitive landscape (both existing and emerging).  Anticipate likely changes and assess the strategic and economic impact of changes over both short and long-term time horizons
    • Develop and document a deep understanding of different product categories, segments, customers and retail channels
    • Analyze industry structure, go-to-market models, competitive dynamics, and market attractiveness and its likely evolution to inform strategy development and priority setting
    • Identify and assess inorganic opportunities – acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, alliances, licensing relationships, etc...
  • Support national scale, cross-functional transformational projects
    • Design and implement projects to execute strategic objectives
    • Manage cross-functional, often virtual, teams in order to maintain steady progress, coordinating workstreams
    • Engage senior stakeholders across the business to help steer the direction and resolve issues
  • Perform other job-related duties as required

Must have’s:
  • Bachelor’s degree and project management expertise
  • 5+ years of experience working with or leading cross-functional teams
  • 5+ years of cumulative business experience, with 2+ years in a major general management consulting firm or similar experience within a corporate strategy team
  • Experience in the CPG industry with exposure to a manufacturing environment
  • Experience with change management and leading transition and implementation work
  • Experience with mergers and acquisitions

  • MBA
  • French and/or Spanish language proficiency
  • Six-Sigma Green/Black Belt or other continuous improvement credentials
